WATER SUPPLY SYSTEM USED IN BUILDING.

Water Supply System is a system consisting of building supply pipe, water distributing pipes, and necessary connecting pipes, fittings which carrying or supplying the potable water by the pressure pump in or adjacent to the building or premises.

There are two types of water supply system are indulged to supply water in building.
1. Indirect water supply
2. Direct water supply

1. Indirect water supply

  • Indirect water supply is also called Down take supply. It is also known as pumping and gravity system. This type of system are used in developing countries like India, Pakistan and Asian countries where the pressure in municipal water mains line is insufficient.
  • This system consists underground tank and overhead tank. Due to low pressure in mains the water can not be pumped directly in overhead tank. So first it needs to take in underground tank and then after it will pumped directly to overhead storage tanks.
  • Then after the water is supplied to floors from overhead tanks by the means of gravity.

Advantages of Indirect water supply

1. The power consumption is less compare to direct water supply system because water distribution is occur by gravity to floors.
2. Due to overhead water storage tank we have a water back up so while the pump is not working we have sufficient time to rectify it.
3. There is not chances to burst a pipe compare to direct water supply due to less pressure compare to direct water supply.

Disadvantages of indirect water supply

1. Pipes and fittings consumption are more.
2. Construction cost increases due to overhead water tank.
3. Lower floors can achieve high pressure while upper floor have low pressure which causing the problem of working in shower valves and flush valves.

2. Direct water supply

  • Direct water supply is also called upward supply. It is also known as pumped supply. This type of water supply systems are used in developed countries like america and European countries where the pressure of municipal water supply mains is sufficient.
  • This system consists under ground water tank which get water from municipal water supply mains and pumped to respective floor with the help of hydro-pneumatic pump.
  • While anyone from the any floor opens the tap then pump get automatically started and brings up the water.

Advantages of Direct water supply

1. In this system, No overhead water storage tank required.
2. Less piping and fittings are required.
3. Upper both points reduces the cost.

Disadvantages of Direct water supply

1. Due to high water pressure pipes can burst.
2. Continuous power supply and back up with generator is required.
3. Maintenance cost of pump is high.
4. No power No water supply.
