DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SOLID WOOD FLOORING, ENGINEERING WOOD FLOORING AND LAMINATE FLOORING

1. Composition

Solid wood flooring : It is a solid piece of natural wood which is cut out from the tree trunk then planed, machined and sanded into planks of flooring.

Engineered wood flooring : It is a combination of solid wood and plywood glued together the top layer of the engineered wood is solid wood and it is more than 2 mm thick. If this thickness is less than 2 mm then it is called veneered wood flooring, not an engineered wood flooring

Laminate wood flooring It contains a photographic image of a wood on decor paper which is adhere to the medium density fiber board.


2. Moisture resistance 


Solid wood flooring : It has no resistance to moisture. It get deterioration when come in contact to moisture or dampness.

Engineered wood flooring : It offers better resistance to moisture compare to solid wood floors.

Laminate wood flooring : It is moderately moisture resistance


3. Scratch resistance

Solid wood flooring : It has a very low resistance to scratches. It can be scratch by the things very easily.

Engineered wood flooring : It has higher resistance to scratches in compare to solid wood flooring.

Laminate wood flooring : It also have high resistance to scratches due to protective layer applied on the top of planks.


4. Duarbility

Solid wood flooring : It has a very long durability of life time If not come in contact to insects or termites.

Engineered wood flooring : It has life span of 30 to 40 years but can last long upto 60 years if maintained properly.

Laminate wood flooring : It has a life span of around 25 to 30 years.


5. Dimensional stability

Solid wood flooring It is a natural wood so it may expand and contract to weather conditions. In cold it will contract and in summer it will expand.

Engineered wood flooring : It is dimensionally stable and do not wrap in weather conditions.

Laminate wood flooring : It is not susceptible to atmospheric changes which makes it dimensionally stable.


6. Thickness

Solid wood flooring : It is generally available in 18 mm to 25 mm thickness.

Engineered wood flooring : It is available in 8 mm to 22 mm thickness.

Laminate wood flooring : It is available in 6 mm to 15 mm thickness.


7. Installation

Solid wood flooring : Its installation is relatively complex.

Engineered wood flooring : Its required moderate expert level of supervision compare to solid wood floors.

Laminate wood flooring : It is very easy to install and does not required high skill person.


8. Sound production

Solid wood flooring : It makes more sound when walking compare to other wood flooring options.

Engineered wood flooring : It produces less sound compare to solid wood floor.

Laminate wood flooring : It produces least sound.


9. Refinish

Solid wood flooring : It can be refinish several times easily by sanding its surface.

Engineered wood flooring : It has only top layer of solid wood so it can be refinish by sanded once or twice times then after it would be replaced.

Laminate wood flooring : It can not be sanded because it does not have any real wood and if damaged the planks have to be replaced.


10. Recycle

Solid wood flooring : It can be recycle.

Engineered wood flooring : It can be recycle.

Laminate wood flooring : It can not be recycled.


11. Maintenance

Solid wood flooring : It requires considerable amount of maintenance for refinishing its surface.

Engineered wood flooring : It also requires maintenance as it also need to refinish its surface.

Laminate wood flooring : It easy to clean and maintain and does not require any finishing.


12. Resale value

Solid wood flooring : Its resale value is excellent due to natural wood is used.

Engineered wood flooring : It also has a higher resale value as it contains the top layer of solid wood.

Laminate wood flooring : It is a synthetic product and it do not contain any wood so its resale value less.


13. Application area

Solid wood flooring : It can be install in any room except the moisture prone areas like Balcony, Wash area, Bathroom and kitchen.

Engineered wood flooring : It can be installed in any room and basement except wet areas like wash area and bathrooms.

Laminate wood flooring : It can be installed in any room and basements except highly moisture prone areas like bathrooms and wash areas.


14. Cost

Solid wood flooring : Its cost varies between 500 to 1000 rs per sqft.


Engineered wood flooring : Its cost varies between 200 to 500 rs per sqft.

Laminate wood flooring : Its cost varies between 80 to 150 rs per sqft.
