Theodolite is a versatile instrument and can be used
  • To measure horizontal angle
  • To measure vertical angle
  • For astronomical observations
  • For levelling work
  • For foundation layout of buildings, boundaries etc.
  • To fix alignment of rail, road, electric poles, Telephone poles etc. 

CLASSIFICATION OF THEODOLITES



Theodolite primarily classified as
        
        1. Transit theodolite.
A theodolite is called transit when its telescope can be revolved through a complete revolution about its horizontal axis in a vertical plane. It is mainly used now a days.

        2. Non transit theodolite.
A theodolite is called non-transit when its telescope can not be revolved through a complete revolution about its horizontal axis in vertical plane.

Theodolite can also be classified as

          1. Vernier theodolite.

In this type of theodolite, verniers are provided for reading horizontal and vertical graduated circles.

          2. Glass arch theodolite.
In this type of theodolite, micrometers are provided for reading horizontal and vertical graduated circles.
