WHAT IS FERRO CEMENT?

FERRO CEMENT

Ferro cement consisting of wire meshes and cement mortar. It consists of closely spaced wire meshes which are impregnated with rich cement mortar mix. While the mortar provides the mass, the wire mess imparts tensile strength and ductility to the material. The ferro cement possess the high resistance against cracking. High fatigue resistance higher toughness and higher impermeability.

Materials used for ferro cement :

1. Cement mortar matrix
2. Reinforcement : There are two type of reinforcement are used.
  1. skeleton steel
  2. Wire mesh

Procedure of ferro cement :
The construction of ferrocement may be divided into four stages :
1. Fabrication of skeleton frame
2. Fixing of bars and mesh
3. Application of mortar
4. Curing
The required number of layers of wire mesh are fixed on both sides of the skeleton frame. A spacing between two meshes layer is of at least 1 to 3 mm. Mortar can be applied by hand or by shotcreting. No form work is required for ferrocement construction.

Properties of ferro cement :

Thickness                            : 10 mm to 60 mm
Steel                                    : 5 to 8 %
Steel cover                          : 1.5 mm to 5 mm
Ultimate tensile strength     : 34.5 N/mm2

Allowable tensile strength   : 10 N/mm2
Compressive strength         : 27.5 to 60 N/mm2

Application of ferro cement :
  • Mobile homes
  • Water tight structures
  • Silos and bins
  • Boat hulls
  • Biogas holder
  • Pipes
  • Folded plates
  • Shell roofs
  • Wind tunnels
  • Swimming pools
  • Curved benches for park
Advantages of ferro cement :
  1. Ferrocement structures are thin and light. Therefore, self weight of structure and foundation cost are reduced.
  2. The construction technique is simple and does not require highly skilled labour.
  3. It is suitable for manufacturing the precast concrete elements.
  4. Partially or completely elimination of formwork will be possible.
  5. It is very easy to repair the deteriorated concrete work.
  6. It is good fire resistant.
  7. It is good impermeable.
