POINTS TO BE OBSERVED WHEN STORING CEMENT AT SITE.

It is often necessary to store cement at site for a long period, Particularly when deliveries are uncertain. Although cement retains its quality almost indefinitely if moisture kept away from it. When cement comes in humid atmosphere, It will absorb moisture from it slowly and gets deteriorated. An absorption of 1 to 2% water has no appreciable effect but a further amount ca hardening the cement and reduces its strength. The more finely cement is ground the more reactive it is, and consequently the more rapidly does it absorb moisture from damp surroundings.

The following points should be observed while storing cement.
1. Bagged cement should be stored in waterproof shed with nonporous shed walls and floors.
2. The plinth of storage area should be well above ground level.
3. Number of opening like doors, windows and ventilators should be minimum and kept tightly shut.
4. Drainage should be provided if necessary to prevent accumulation of water in the vicinity of the shed.
5. Cement bags should be kept 30 cm away from walls.
6. Not more than 14 bags should be kept one above other.
7. To reduce air circulation, No gap is desirable between rows of cement stacks.
8. In wet area, Cement should be placed on wooden planks kept above fresh bags.
9. Old bags should be used first. For beams and slab casting use fresh bags.
10. Once the cement has been properly stored. It should not be disturbed until it is to be used. The practice of moving and stacking the bags, exposes fresh cement to air.
