### HOW TO CALCULATE BRICKS AND MORTAR IN WALL

Let’s take an example to understand it well.

EXAMPLE:

Suppose we have to construct the wall having a volume of the 1-meter cube, the size of brick is going to use is 230 mm X 100 mm X 75 mm and mortar is 8 mm thick with the cement mortar proportion of 1: 4.

So

1.) Calculate the number of bricks?

2.) The quantity of cement?

3.) The quantity of sand?

GIVEN DATA:

Volume (L x W x H) = 1 meter cube.

Mortar thickness = 8 mm.

Mortar Ratio = 1:4

Size of brick = 230 mm X 100 mm X 75 mm

Size of brick with mortar = 238 mm X 108 mm X 83 mm

SOLUTION:

This calculation can take place into 2 steps.

1. STEP: (BRICKS CALCULATION)

1. Volume of 1 brick = (0.23m X 0.1m X 0.075m) = 0.001725 meter cube.

2. Volume of 1 brick with mortar = (0.238m X 0.108 m X 0.083 m) = 0.002133 Meyer cube.

3. No of bricks in 1 cum = volume/volume of bricks with mortar = 1/0.001725 = 470 bricks

2. STEP: (MORTAR CALCULATION)

1. Volume covered by 469 bricks in 1 Cum Volume = (Bricks number x Volume of 1 brick).

2. Bricks Volume = 470 x 0.001725 = 0.8087 meter cube.

3. Volume = (Total volume – volume of bricks).

4. Mortar volume = 1 – 0.8087 = 0.1913 meter cube. (wet volume).

5. Dry Volume = 0.1913 x 1.33 = 0.2544 meter cube (dry Volume). Where (1.33 is a constant)

CEMENT:

Cement: = (dry volume x Ratio x Density of cement in 1 cum)/Sum of Ratio.

= (0.2544 x 1 x 1440)/5*50

= 1.46 bags is equal to the,

= 1.5 bags

SAND:

Sand: = (dry volume x Ratio x 35.3147)/Sum of Ratio. (1 Cum = 35.3147 cubic feet.)

= (0.2544 x 4 x 35.3147)/5

= 7.18 cubic feet

CONCLUSION:

BRICKS = 470 nos 76.4%

CEMENT = 1.5 bags. 4.7%

SAND = 7.18 cubic feet.
