FIELD TESTS OF CEMENT

Cement is a main ingredient of concrete and it imparts strength to the concrete therefore we should have to check quality of it. To evaluate the quality of cement in short time we have to carry out some tests on it at construction site which are given below.

1. Presence of lumps : Cement should be free from any type of hard lumps. Lumps are formed due to absorption of moisture from air by the cement. Hence, If any lumps are present in a cement should be rejected.

2. color test : The color of cement should be uniform. Generally color of cement is greenish grey.

3. temperature test : When the hand is inserted in cement bag it should give cool feeling not warm.

4. Adulteration test : Take a pinch of cement and feel between the fingers. It should give a smooth feeling and not gritty feeling.

5. Float test : Take a handful of cement and throw it on the bucket full of water, the particles should float on water for some time before they sink.

6. Strength Test : This test involves preparation of a block of cement of dimension 25 mm ×25 mm and length of 200 mm. It is immersed for 7 days in water. It is then placed on supports 150mm apart and it is loaded with a weight of about 34kg. If the block will not show any failure, then the cement is of good quality.

7. Setting test : Take about 100 grams of cement, add some water and prepare a stiff paste. From the stiff paste, pat a cake with sharp edges. Put it on a glass plate and slowly take it under water in bucket. The sharp edges of the cake should not distrubed, While taking it down to bottom of the bucket. After 24 hours the cake should retain its original shape and at the same time it should also set and gain some strength.

8. Date of packing : When purchasing a cement, The date of packing should be checked. The age of cement effects the strength of cement.
