ESSENTIAL CONSTITUENTS OF PAINT.

PAINTS ARE APPLIED ON SURFACE TO PROTECT THE SURFACE FROM WEATHERING CONDITIONS AND GIVES THEM AESTHETIC APPEARANCE. WE ARE USED PAINTS ON SURFACE OF METALS, WOODS, CONCRETE WALLS ETC. PAINTS ARE VERY USEFUL IN CONSTRUCTION AREA SO WE SHOULD HAVE TO KNOW AN ESSENTIAL CONSTITUENTS OF PAINT.

ESSENTIAL CONSTITUENTS OF PAINT ARE GIVEN BELOW.

1. BASE
2. A VEHICLE
3. A PIGMENT
4. A DRIER
5. A THINNER

1. Base :-
  • It is a main constituent of paint.
  • It possesses binding properties.
  • It forms an opaque coating.
  • Commonly used bases for paints are white lead, red lead, zinc oxide, iron oxide, titanium white, aluminium powder lithophone.
2. Vehicles :-
  • It is also known as binder.
  • The vehicles are liquid substances which hold the ingredients of a paint in liquid suspension and allow them to be applied on the surface to be painted.
  • Commonly used vehicles are linseed oil, tung oil, nut oil etc.
3. Pigments :-
  • Pigments give desirable colors to the paint.
  • They are fine particles and have a reinforcing effect on thin film of the paint.
  • Commonly used pigments for different colors are :

  1. Black : Lamp black, suit and charcoal black.
  2. Red : Venedion red, red lead and indian red.
  3. Brown : Burned timber, raw and burned sienna.
  4. Green : Chrome green, copper sulfate.
  5. Blue : Prussian blue and ultra marine.
  6. Yellow : Ochre and chrome yellow.
4. Drier :-
  • The function of drier is to absorb oxygen from the air and supply it to the vehicle for hardening.
  • Driers are available in market in two type of forms like solid and liquid state.
  • The drier should not be added until the paint is about to be used.
  • Excess quantity of drier is harmful because it destroy elasticity and cause flaking on surface of paint.
  • Commonly used driers are red lead, sulfate of manganese and litharge.
5. Thinner :-
  • It is also known as a solvent.
  • It makes application of paint easy, smooth and spreading evenly.
  • It makes paint thinner and hence increase the coverage of paint.
  • It helps in spreading paint uniformly over the surface.
  • Commonly used thinners are turpentine and neptha.
  • After paint applied, Thinner evaporates and paint dries.
